Vacation Fun In Ixtapa Mexico

by Sean Elstins

Ixtapa, Mexico is a modern resort area, without the crowds of Cancun or Acapulco. Vacationers experience the best Mexico has to offer. The region is ideal for all water sports, and is blessed with lovely white sand beaches. First class amenities abound, combined with the quaint old town feel of neighboring Zihuatanejo.

Ixtapa boasts an ideal climate. Its temperature is 78.8 Fahrenheit on average, and sunny almost every day. It is located about 150 miles north of Acapulco. During the rainiest months, there are only intermittent afternoon showers. The area is hilly and tropical, with white sand beaches and hidden coves. Since half the area has been designated an ecological preserve, Ixtapa maintains a very peaceful atmosphere.

This destination is easy to get to, as its airport, called Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International, has nonstop flights from many American cities. The airport is located only minutes from the resort area. While in Ixtapa, visitors do not need rental cars, and can rely on reasonably priced taxis and local transport. Day trips outside the resort would require a rental car, which can be rented at the airport.

Activities include golfing, sunbathing, water sports and deep sea fishing. Golfers can choose between two excellent courses: Palma Real Golf and Tennis Club, and Marina Ixtapa Golf Club. Ixtapa continues to be very popular for sport fishing large and small game fish. Main game fishing consists of sailfish, marlin, and rooster fish. The town offers a number of excellent boat charters and equipment providers. Local fishing captains are well known for their expertise in finding prime fishing spots along the coast.

Snorkeling and scuba diving off Ixtapa beaches is idyllic. This is the site of the southwestern coastal plain, providing many interesting dive areas among the volcanic rock and marine sediment. There are over fifty well-known dive areas. Multitudes of certified dive schools offer every training level, along with the necessary equipment to make diving safe and fun. Ixtapa’s beaches are memorable, ranging from those in protected bays excellent for snorkelers and swimmers, to beaches with big waves desirable for surfing. One of the most popular dive sites is off Ixtapa Island, a short water taxi ride from the mainland beach. Other popular beaches great for snorkeling and scuba diving are Playa El Palmar and Playa Linda.

Ixtapa is only five minutes from the quaint Mexican village of Zihuatanejo. Visitors can easily split their time between both places. The combined locales provide an abundance of first class restaurants and a huge variety of shopping. Zihuatanejo has lovely seaside cafes, markets selling local crafts, and a picturesque promenade by the sea, contrasted by Ixtapa’s contemporary sophistication.

An Ixtapa, Mexico vacation offers a huge variety of modern resort amenities and activities, along with a tranquil atmosphere without the crowds experienced at larger resort areas. This destination allows travelers to experience comfort and luxury along with quaint old-time Mexican character.
